In the history of technology, there have been dozens of inventions and discoveries that changed the way we live. Some were small and incremental, while others were so huge that they changed everything about how we live.   • The wheel was invented around 5400 BCE as a means of transportation, which allowed trade and travel to occur at higher speeds than ever before. It also enabled people to build carts and wagons that could transport things over land more easily than carrying them on foot or horseback would allow. Moreover, not only did this invention allow people to travel greater distances with less effort; it also greatly reduced the chances of getting lost on the way there—a huge benefit for those who didn’t know where they were going yet!

The Gutenberg Printing Press – 1450.

The printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in 1450. Before this time, books could only be produced by hand and the process took a long time. The invention of the printing press made it possible to produce books faster and more efficiently. This led to an increase in literacy rates across society as well as reducing their prices.

Gutenberg’s contribution to humanity is immense due to its impact on education, culture and science.

The Gun – 1364.

The gun was invented in China, but the Europeans were the first to use it as a weapon. The gun is a weapon that uses a chemical reaction to fire a projectile such as an arrow, bullet or rocket. The first use of guns on European soil is often attributed to the Dutch and Spanish fighting over control of the New World in 1494. The Car – 1886.

The car is one of the best examples of a technology that has changed the world. In addition to providing personal transportation, it has shaped how we live and work, how we communicate with each other, and how we travel.

The invention of the automobile in 1886 was revolutionary because it made traveling easier and faster. Before cars were invented many people relied on trains or other forms of public transportation to get around town or across country. With these forms of transportation you had to know where you were going before you left your home because there was no way for you to get there once you got off at your stop without help from another person or an outside source such as a taxi driver who would take them where they needed/wanted them go! With cars however all that changed because now anyone could drive themselves anywhere they wanted/needed them go! In fact when automobiles first came out people weren’t even sure if they’d ever catch on but now there are millions upon millions around our world today!!

Cars also changed how we communicated with each other while traveling too since before cars were invented most people didn’t talk much while riding together unless something important needed saying like “I’m hungry” or “I need gas.” After cars became popular though everyone started talking more often than not due mostly because everyone wanted their stories heard over everyone else’s story being told instead which sometimes led into arguments between passengers about whose story was better than theirs.”

The Computer – 1936.

Alan Turing is often referred to as the father of computer science. He was a brilliant mathematician who developed a machine that would store and retrieve information, which he called the “Universal Machine”. It could be programmed to perform any task automatically by inputting an appropriate set of instructions.

The first programmable electronic computer was invented by John Atanasoff in 1939, but it wasn’t until 1943 when Howard Aiken constructed ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) that we began using computers on a large scale. ENIAC had 18000 vacuum tubes and performed up to 50000 additions per second.

The Telephone – 1876.

The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. It was first used to make a call on March 10, 1876, between Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant Thomas Watson. This invention was a major advancement in communication technology, allowing people to speak to each other at far distances. The first telephone call changed the world forever and led to many other technological advancements that have shaped our lives today.

The Steam Engine – 1712.

The first practical steam engine was invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. It was used to pump water out of mines, but it still relied on human power.

Electricity – 1600s + 1752 + 1800s

Electricity is the most important technology of all, and it has been for centuries. In fact, many people consider electricity to be the only technology that is truly “new.”

The first major application of electricity was in lighting: lamps first appeared on streets as early as 1623 when John Parkinson noticed that certain metals glowed after being rubbed with cloth. The first patent for an electrical machine came in 1752 from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson; they used static electricity to create a lightning storm inside their lab (which apparently caused some damage). In 1800s, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb and began creating electric plants which allowed people to use electricity in their homes.

Airplanes and Flight – 1903.

If you’re a non-American, I bet you don’t know what the Wright brothers are. You might be excused for not knowing about them since they aren’t American, but if you live in America, this is one of those things that every child learns in school. The Wright brothers were pioneers who made it possible for humans to fly.

Their first powered flight lasted only 12 seconds and was recorded via film by a camera that they built themselves. And unlike many other inventors of their day who were building airplanes without knowing how to control them (like the Englishman George Cayley), the Wright brothers knew exactly what they were doing: designing an airplane that could be controlled in the air.

Internet and World Wide Web – 1983 + 1989.

In the early 1980s, the United States military created a network called ARPANET to allow communications among different computers. It was not designed for public use—in fact, it wasn’t even advertised as being available to anyone outside of its original purpose.

In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee created a system called Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) using his own personal computer at CERN in Switzerland. This system allowed users to link documents together into one cohesive whole; this led directly to the creation of the World Wide Web (WWW).
